As with many other jobs, the ability to concentrate is a very important part of my job as a voiceover artist. In fact I’m not sure I can think of a job where concentration isn’t important! But in our busy lives sometimes staying focussed can be tricky and some days it’s harder than others. I recently found myself in a recording session literally saying to myself ‘CONCENTRATE!’.
The potential of a concentrated mind is immense, so here are a few things that can help with concentration.
Sleep – Sounds pretty obvious but getting a good night’s sleep is very important.
Food – Light and healthy meals are the key to a light and healthy mind!
Water – We all grab a coffee, tea or sugary drink when we want an energy boost but water is the best thing to give you that lift.
Plan your time – If you spend a little time at the start of the day planning your time it really helps you to concentrate and stops you worrying about what you’re NOT getting done.
Take regular breaks – Taking a small break every hour is excellent for the brain. We can only concentrate for a certain amount of time so take a break before your mind starts to wander.
Go for a walk – To increase the oxygen in your blood it’s a good idea to get up and move around. It doesn’t have to be far but just a 30 second wander around can help clear your head so you’re ready to focus again.
Don’t be too hard on yourself – some days are harder than others and I think the key is to accept that and just think positively!
Do you have any other great tips for helping with concentration? If so add them in the comments below. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
